The United States Patent and Trademark office, or USPTO as it is often called, is an agency in the United States Department of Commerce that issues patents to inventors and businesses for their inventions and trademark registra- tions for product and intellectual property identification. The agency is located in its headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, in an 11-building city-like development with a total of 4.9 million square feet of office space, two data centers, an auditorium and training space, a cafeteria, and a child care center. The development has won numerous industry awards for its innovative design.
